Convert Scanned PDF to Word

A scanned PDF looks like a document, but it's actually a folder of full-page images. You can't select the text, copy it, search it, or edit it — and converting it with a normal PDF-to-Word tool returns a Word file full of blank pages. The fix is OCR (Optical Character Recognition): reading the characters in the images and rebuilding them as real, editable text.
How to Convert a Scanned PDF to Word
- Open the OCR tool — no install, no signup.
- Upload the scanned PDF (or a JPG, PNG, BMP, or WebP image of the scan).
- Click Extract Text. The tool checks for embedded text first and runs OCR only on pages that are actual images, which keeps mixed documents fast.
- Download the result as DOCX — an editable Word document — or as TXT.
The OCR engine is Tesseract.js, the most widely used open-source OCR engine, running entirely in your browser. English text is fully supported, and the results download as a formatted Word document.
Get the Most Accurate Results
- Scan at 300 DPI or higher. Resolution is the single biggest factor in accuracy.
- Keep the page straight. Skewed pages confuse character shapes — most scanners auto-straighten.
- Ensure good contrast. Black text on a white background reads best; grey-on-grey and colored backgrounds produce errors.
- Know the limits. Clean printed text converts very reliably. Handwriting, stamps, and decorative fonts do not.
After conversion, open the DOCX and review it before use — a quick proofread of a contract clause or an address field is worth the seconds it takes. Legal, medical, and financial scans benefit doubly from this approach: OCR makes them editable and searchable, and because everything runs in your browser, the documents never leave your device.
What About a PDF That's Already Digital?
If your PDF already lets you select and copy text (try it — highlight a sentence and press Ctrl+C), it isn't a scan at all. Skip OCR and use the plain PDF to Word converter directly for a cleaner result. Only image-based files need the OCR route.
