Rotate a PDF and Save It: Why Rotation Doesn't Always Stick

Every PDF user has hit it: you open a document, it's sideways, you rotate it in your PDF viewer, save it — and the next person who opens the file sees it sideways again. Here's why that happens and how to fix it for good.

Why Rotation "Doesn't Stick"

Most PDF viewers have two different kinds of rotation. View-only rotation just turns the page on your screen for the current session — it's a display preference, not a change to the file. When you hit save, nothing about the document itself changes, which is why the rotation never survives. The other kind is permanent rotation, which writes the rotation into the PDF's page metadata so every viewer on every device honors it.

PDFs end up sideways for simple reasons: documents scanned on office machines with the paper loaded the wrong way, phone photos converted to PDF while held at an angle, or files assembled from multiple sources where page orientations differ. Whatever the cause, the fix is the same — rotate the pages permanently and save a new file.

How to Rotate a PDF Permanently

90° or 270°? Getting the Direction Right

A page that needs a quarter turn has two possible fixes: 90° and 270°, which are opposites. The rule of thumb: if the text reads from top to bottom of the page (rather than across), you need 270°; if it reads bottom-to-top, you need 90°. When in doubt, apply one, check the preview, and apply the other if it looks wrong — the preview makes this a two-second decision.

Check the Whole Document

Long PDFs often have a single misaligned page hiding in the middle.
