How to Compress a PDF Under 200KB
Updated August 7, 2026
Many application systems reject PDFs that weigh more than 200 KB: visa portals, scholarship platforms, bank forms, and resume uploaders all impose the limit to keep their servers fast. The good news is that getting a typical PDF below 200 KB is quick and free — and with a browser-only tool, your document never gets uploaded anywhere.
Compress a PDF to Under 200 KB in 4 Steps
- Open the Compress PDF tool — no signup, no install.
- Drag your PDF into the drop zone (files up to 50 MB are supported).
- Select High — Smallest size from the compression level menu.
- Click Compress PDF and download the result.
Text-based documents — resumes, cover letters, application forms, invoices — shrink dramatically with this setting. A two-page letter that starts at 800 KB will typically compress to 30-60 KB with no visible change in quality.
When a PDF Won't Reach 200 KB
Scanned documents are the exception. Every page of a scan is stored as a full-page image, and images are what take up the space. If High compression still leaves you above the limit, you have two options:
- Re-scan at a lower quality — 150-200 DPI in black and white instead of 300 DPI color. This alone often cuts file size by half.
- Convert the scan to a text PDF — run the file through our OCR tool to extract the text, then rebuild it. A text PDF of the same document can be 90% smaller than the scan.
Check the Size Before You Submit
After downloading, right-click the file and choose Properties (Windows) or Get Info (Mac) to confirm the size, or select it in your file manager — most show size at a glance. If you're still above 200 KB, drop the compression level to High again after removing any unneeded pages first with our Split PDF tool.
